Abstract: This presentation explores the question, “Does quality writing in laboratory notebooks promote a better understanding of chemistry concepts and the ability to design an experiment. In this study, we analyzed the quality of writing in student laboratory notebooks in two groups. One group used guided-inquiry and the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach, the other group used a traditional approach to the laboratory. The laboratory notebooks were analyzed for several characteristics. Both groups were administered the same lecture exams and the same lab practical examination. The guided-inquiry SWH group showed a better understanding of chemistry concepts and a better ability to design experiments.
